My Trip To The Careers Fair, And How It Allowed Me To Make A Knowledgeable Career Choice.

I remember back when I was at Sixth Form. It was my second year, so I had almost completed my A levels. I had no clue what Career choices I wanted to consider. I had never really gave much attention to Careers at that time – I was content just sitting playing on my playstation 2, or having fun with friends. Looking at all the New careers that were accessible to people like me always seemed so dull, so I never bothered. As a result, my A level choices seemed a little weird to some people: Geography, Business studies, and Psychology. The outcome of having no clue what Careers I was interested in. They appeared to be a good mixture to keep my Career choices open. I was hopeful that throughout my two years of College I would discover some New careers I had never heard of that I would find interesting. However, no such luck. So when I found out the College were doing a free visit to a Careers and recruitment fair at the then Telewest arena, I figured it might be an idea to go along, and see what Career choices they had available.

The Careers fair was on for 3 days. We went on the second day. I had no clue what to expect really. Me and my friends dressed up as we normally would, jeans, trainers, jacket. As soon as we got there we realised this may not have been the greatest idea. There appeared to be a lot of people dressed as if they were attending interviews. Once inside we felt a bit better, a lot of other people had also went for casual dress. That was one lesson learnt already.

So we all began wandering off, peering at the booths, seeing what freebies we could take without actually having to chat to anyone. After I had amassed a nice little collection of pens, notebooks and coasters, I thought it may be more useful to actually speak to someone. Maybe I could come away with some ideas on New careers! I finally gathered up some courage and spoke to a business that seemed to be working on renewable energy sources, hoping my Geography could come in useful. No such luck, they wanted science graduates. So I tried wandering around other booths. Most of the people appeared too busy to talk to us. There were a lot of graduates at the fair as well, and they appeared to be getting all the attention. I was quickly becoming fed up as I had no idea who the companies were, and didn’t really know where to begin looking. Typically the ones that did look appealing were already chatting to someone who had either made an effort to dress appropriately, or looked a good 4 years older than me.

Finally, discouraged, we all gave up and went to McDonalds for some grub. However, it wasn’t all bad. I attained a lot of brochures from the booths, and when I got back home I had a load of reading material. After reading the information I had attained, I determined a career in Geography sounded the most appealing, so it lead to me choosing a degree course in Geography and Environmental Management at Northumbria University. So in spite of the initial disappointment, I did actually acquire some very helpful information from the fair, information that helped me make one of the big decisions you have to make, your choice of degree.
