If you are about to start a New Career, you’re probably somewhat nervous, worrying about all the different things that could go wrong. What if you detest it, maybe you should have opted for one of the other Careers instead, what if you don’t make a good first impression with your new colleagues? There are many things to worry about for individuals starting out on New careers, so I have compiled some useful hints and tips here to help people conquer those jitters, keep positive and help ensure they don’t let stress get the better of them when starting out on a new job or career.
One of the best things you can do is plan in advance of your big day, and ensure you are fully prepared and equipped to start. It won’t help you being a bag of nerves on your big day, and then realising you haven’t totally prepared, and don’t know where to go, or how to get there, or finding out you don’t have everything you should have. Make sure you start getting ready several days in advance, in case you need to get something which may take a while to locate. Starting out in a brand New Career or job will most likely require that you take things along such as bank details, proof of identity or address, possibly a birth certificate or utility bill. Make sure you have these accessible, and ready to take with you.
If your interview was in a different area to where your job is, aim to make a practise run there, to ensure you know where you’re going, and so you get a good idea of how long it’s going to take you to travel there. Make a note of things such as parking accessibility if you’re taking your own car, or if using public transport, look at the schedules beforehand. Awareness of the route you need to take will help get rid of some of the stress.
If you’re changing Careers to something similar to what you presently do, then try not to get yourself too worried about meeting up with your new colleagues. You have to remember these are, mostly, going to be likeminded people. So try not to be too stressed, and concerned about befriending people – just be yourself. You’ll be more relaxed that way, and the more relaxed you are, the easier you will find it to talk to people.
For people stating up New careers it can be a little more intimidating going to work for the first time, especially if you have no idea what type of individuals you are going to be working with. However, the same advice is relevant here – just be yourself, and relax, you are sure to make friends soon enough – you’ve been beaten probably lots of people to get to where you are, these people want to work with you!
